MANILA, Philippines — More than half of the fire-stricken area at the old Navotas sanitary landfill has been contained, Mayor John Rey Tiangco said on Monday.
Tiangco said updated drone imaging and mapping showed significant progress at the site, with intensified soil covering efforts helping contain the fire.
The city government deployed around 140 truckloads of soil and filling materials on Monday to speed up containment operations, as crews continued working downward across the garbage mound.
Tiangco said operations are now focused on the portion facing Obando in Bulacan, which is the last remaining area to be addressed.
The Navotas landfill fire broke out on April 10.
Air quality in Navotas, Malabon and Obando remained at “good” levels, based on monitoring by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Environmental Management Bureau.
The Navotas local government said it would continue the response efforts to fully extinguish the landfill fire.
