MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) expects the canvassing of votes for senators and party-list groups in the May 12 elections to be completed in a week at most.

“From the Municipal and Provincial Boards of Canvassers, they will be brought to the National Board of Canvassers. By our estimates, the canvassing in the national level will run from five to seven days,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia said at a press briefing yesterday.

He added, “Five days is definitely a lot faster compared to the almost a month canvassing in the manual elections.”

During the May 2022 polls, the winning senatorial candidates were proclaimed after nine days while proclamation of the winning party-list groups was made after 17 days.

Garcia, however, noted that the unofficial results of voting can already be known as early as the night of election day, mainly due to the speedy transmission of results by the automated counting machines.

Garcia pointed out that Comelec and its service provider for transmission will be using 5G technology.

He also noted the availability of Starlink technology to be used in areas with very weak signals.

“The people should not be surprised with our fast transmission of election results,” Garcia said.
