MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has ordered the dismissal of seven Caloocan police officers linked to the illegal arrest of Jayson dela Rosa, a case that went viral after his son died of leptospirosis while searching for him in floodwaters.

In a statement on Thursday, December 11, Napolcom said its En Banc ordered the dismissal of seven Caloocan City police officers after finding them liable for grave misconduct, grave dishonesty, incompetence, oppression, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.

"These violations stemmed from the unlawful detention, falsified documentation, and fabricated criminal charges filed against Dela Rosa," Napolcom's statement read.

"The findings reveal a clear abuse of power and a blatant disregard for due process and human rights. Such actions have no place in the police service," it added, citing a statement of Commissioner Ralph Calinisan.

The following are the policemen who were dismissed:

  • PCPT Romel Caburog
  • PLT Jeffren Aganos
  • PMSG Ryan Candelario
  • PSSG Stephen Somlani
  • PSSG Darwin Indiongco
  • PCPL Marvin Resumadero
  • PSSG Rodolfo King Bautista

Death of the altarboy. The illegal arrest set off a tragic chain of events when Dela Rosa's son reportedly contracted leptospirosis and died in July 2024 while searching for his father.

According to Kalookan Bishop Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Jayson's son, Dion Angelo "Gelo" Dela Rosa, a 20-year-old altar server and college student, died after contracting the disease. He had spent several days wading through floodwaters caused by the southwest monsoon while looking for Jayson. The family later learned that Jayson had been arrested without a warrant for alleged illegal gambling and detained by police.

David added that Dion and his mother visited multiple police stations before finally locating Jayson in custody three days later, on July 25.

After being reunited with his father, Dion quickly fell ill, exhibiting symptoms such as fever and body aches. Tragically, he passed away on July 27 from complications of leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection typically contracted through exposure to contaminated floodwaters.
