MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos ordered yesterday a base pay increase for military and uniformed personnel, to be implemented in three tranches beginning next year.
The announcement was made amid talk of supposed destabilization efforts against the government in connection with the flood control scandal.
The salary hike will cover MUP under the Department of National Defense, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Corrections and the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority.
Marcos said the adjustments will take effect on Jan. 1, 2026; Jan. 1, 2027 and Jan. 1, 2028.
Apart from the salary increase, all MUP will receive their P350 daily subsistence allowance starting Jan. 1 next year.
Marcos cited the role of the military and police in ensuring public safety, as well as the crucial response of uniformed services during recent natural disasters.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines, in a statement, welcomed this move.
“This gesture reflects the administration’s recognition of the sacrifices made by our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who dedicate their lives to protecting our people and safeguarding our sovereignty,” Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said.
The salary hike automatically raises the pensions of retired MUP.
Benjamin Diokno, when he was finance secretary, had warned that unless reforms were made in the “unsustainable” MUP pension system, it could lead to “fiscal collapse.” He was later moved to the Monetary Board.
