MRT-3 now accepts cashless payments (GCash, QR Ph) following a pilot test run. This was announced by the Departmentof Transportation (DOTr) via a Facebook post, promoting easier, secure ways to pay for rides.
As per the DOTr, this follows the President’s directive to modernize public transport and improve passenger convenience. For cashless payments, commuters can now simply scan the QR code on ticket booth counters.
Single journey tickets can now be paid for by using GCash or QR Ph-supported digital banking/e-wallet apps. This system is expected to reduce lines at said counters, while also speeding up boarding times and limiting physical contact.
This is certainly a timely development as commuters have returned to opt for public transportation. Plus, it supports the Philippines’ adoption of opting for digital payments in government-run services.
The DOTr says that commuter feedback and system performance will be monitored during the pilot run period. This is just a part of a broader plan to make digital transactions part of everyday commuting.
Communication graduate, closet cynic, and kid at heart. Duane is a rare person to find, quite literally. He often takes to himself but has proven his mettle in tech media with his quick wits. Well, the portfolio of scriptwriting, web content, and public relations help too, we suppose. As a homebody, he often spends his time on the streaming platform Twitch or ‘farming’ gaming clips with friends. He is also an avid fan of round glasses and anything relative to blueberries.
