MANILA, Philippines —  More schools are suspending classes and work on Feb. 25, the 40th anniversary of the EDSA people power revolution.

The Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) and University of the East’s Manila and Caloocan campuses are among schools that will commemorate the event.

Many people have no memory of the “genuine popular achievement of February 1986 and only see the widespread and brazen corruption, impunity and inequality in our country today,” Ateneo president Roberto Yap said.

“At a time when the significance of this historical moment is diminished by instances of massive corruption, impunity and injustice, we remain steadfast in upholding its legacy of active citizenship,” DLSP said.

Catholic groups earlier said that EDSA is an “unfinished movement that demands vigilance, active participation and collective resolve from all sectors.”

No resignation calls

Organizers of the Trillion Peso March will not call for the resignation of President Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte at the third anti-corruption protest on Feb. 25.

“If some groups, though, have these calls, they’re still welcome to join, as long as they won’t disrupt our program,” Kiko Aquino Dee, co-convenor of the Buhay ang People Power Campaign Network, yesterday told radio True FM.

“What’s prohibited for us are calls related to the revolutionary government, withdrawal of support and, because we’re careful with the Constitution, a transition council,” he stressed.

Concert against corruption

A Feb. 21 concert will be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City by the Mayors for Good Governance and Kaya Natin group.

The “People Power 40 Concert: Awit at Aksyon Kontra Korapsyon” will feature some of the country’s top performers, including Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, Rivermaya, Ice Seguerra, Ebe Dancel, Pio Balbuena, Morobeats, Elmo Magalona, Arkin Magalona, Chelsea Alley and Over October.

Security

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of protesters.

“We are now reviewing and updating our security plan for this event. The goal is to ensure peace and order while respecting the rights of the people to assemble and freedom of speech,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said yesterday. –  EJ Macababbad, Evelyn Macairan, Emmanuel Tupas
