MANILA, Philippines — While a number of names have already come and gone, President Marcos yesterday raised the possibility of more heads rolling after the performance review of his Cabinet.
In a podcast interview posted on Facebook, Marcos said a number of officials whose irregularities were validated have already been dismissed, although their separation from government service was not announced.
“We did not talk about it anymore because it will only create trouble. Just leave. If you don’t, we would file charges. I will put you in jail. Just leave. A number of them did (leave),” the President told broadcaster Anthony Taberna.
“We will conduct a performance review. The performance review is going well. This is our target. Why did we not reach it? This is overpriced... all of these things (are covered by the) performance review. We will check why the delivery of service is slow. What will we do to hasten it? That is important,” he added.
When asked whether he would fire Cabinet members, Marcos replied: “That might happen because of the performance review we are conducting. That is my warning to them... we will have to look at it again.”
“If they do not perform well, (I would remove them),” he added.
Marcos said he has also sacked officials whose performance he was not happy with.
“We have many reasons why it did not happen, why it was not accomplished, why it took so long, but the people are not interested in that. What now? When will it be done? When will we feel that? You cannot blame the people… they are right. You are the one handling the government, so do it well. Do not complain to us. Just do it,” the Chief Executive said.
“Actually, that’s the lesson we learned from this election. Don’t explain it to us anymore. Just do it. Enough of the good explanations with the good statistics and drawings. Just do it. I don’t blame people,” Marcos noted.
OWWA land deal probe
In a related development, Malacañang said more officials may be dismissed or suspended over the questionable P1.4-billion land acquisition by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), which led to the removal of its former administrator Arnell Ignacio.
The Department of Migrant Workers is investigating the land purchase deal, which was not approved by the OWWA Board of Trustees.
