COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Policemen and barangay officials exhumed on Wednesday, March 25, from a shallow grave in Barangay Masigay in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur a male Chinese national who was reported missing two days before.

Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, local executives and officials of the Datu Piang Municipal Police Station separately told reporters on Thursday morning that it was Moro villagers who led policemen and soldiers to the spot where the slain Shang Lai Hong was buried, possibly first snatched and shot dead somewhere outside.

Datu Piang is one of the 24 barangays in Maguindanao del Sur, which is inside the core territory of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Senior officials of the Maguindanao Provincial Police Office, which is based in nearby Shariff Aguak town, said Moro community leaders and policemen are together verifying tips from confidential informants that Hong was abducted and killed in Sultan Kudarat province in Region 12 and was brought by his abductors in Barangay Masigay in Datu Piang and buried him there hastily.

Army and police intelligence officials said they are validating information relayed to them by local executives stating that Hong, a Chinese from Sabah, Malaysia, was residing in Pangasinan province in Luzon and was in Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat three days before he was reported missing by his friends in the area.

Hong, a businessman based in Dagupan City in Pangasinan, reportedly first met with certain contacts in the cities of Zamboanga, Tacurong and in Cotabato, the capital of the Bangsamoro region, before he disappeared.

He was last seen in Tacurong City, one of the four cities in Administrative Region 12, about 70 kilometers north of Barangay Masigay in Datu Piang.

Personnel of intelligence units of the Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade and the 6th Infantry Division are helping officials of PRO-BAR units put closure on the murder of Hong somewhere outside of Maguindanao del Sur.

De Guzman and police officials in Maguindanao del Sur said it was villagers in Barangay Masigay who discovered where Hong was buried, both hands tied, with gunshot wounds in his body.
