MANILA, Philippines — Miss Charm Philippines 2025 Cyrille Payumo has issued a public apology after wearing the iconic farewell gown of 2018 Miss Universe Catriona Gray during the second edition of Miss Universe Philippines – Pampanga on Jan. 25
According to Payumo, days before the event, she was informed that renowned Filipino designer Mak Tumang would be sponsoring her gown for her final walk as representative of Pampanga. Among the options presented to her was the legendary blue beaded gown that Gray had worn during her farewell walk as Miss Universe 2018.
"To add to the magic of the moment, I was informed that one of options from his masterpieces would be the farewell gown of Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray. A wave of emotions flooded over me — excitement, nerves, and a profound sense of honor. My heart swelled with awe and I felt an overwhelming sense of privilege," shared Payumo.
However, the gown's reappearance sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning whether proper permission had been granted for its reuse and others expressing concern that it diminished the significance of Gray's legacy.

"I understand that wearing such an iconic gown has sparked divided opinions. To those who may have been hurt or offended, I want to clarify that causing pain was never my intention. My goal was to honor not only the victory of bringing the Miss Philippines Charm title home to Pampanga but also to celebrate the visionary artistry of Mak Tumang. I want to express my deep gratitude to Sir Mak for allowing me to wear one of his stunning masterpieces," she continued.
Payumo has taken full responsibility for any misunderstandings and expressed regret over any unintended offense her choice may have caused.
"I recognize that my actions may have unintentionally diminished the significance of Catriona Gray's monumental achievements, and for that, I am deeply sorry," Payumo added.
Amid the backlash, several pageant fans and beauty queens have since rallied behind Payumo.
"My sweet Cyrille!! No need to apologize. The pageant realm should be apologizing for their ongoing toxic behavior towards women who have good intentions. Can't wait to see you raise our PH flag, we are so proud of you," Miss Universe New Zealand 2024 Victoria Velasquez Vincent commented.
"And you wore it beautifully!! No need to apologize. People are always looking for something to pick apart and gossip about. We will always have your back," added Miss Charm 2024 Philippines Kayla Jean Carter.
Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Chelsea Manalo and Miss Universe Philippines Quezon City 2024 Cam Lagmay, on the other hand, expressed support in the comments section with heart emojis.
