MANILA, Philippines — Davao-based minimum wage earners and domestic workers, or "kasambahays," will receive a pay increase starting March 13.
In a statement on Wednesday, February 25, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced the adjustments for the Davao Region.
Agricultural workers will see a P20 increase in their daily minimum wage, raising it to P525. Meanwhile, non-agricultural workers will receive a P30 hike, bringing their daily rate to P540.
With the wage hike, the estimated minimum monthly wage will reach P13,693.75 for agricultural workers and P14,085 for non-agricultural workers, benefiting about 66,772 minimum wage earners.
Domestic workers, on the other hand, will receive an increase in their monthly pay, setting a new minimum rate of P6,500 across the region. Those employed in chartered cities and first-class municipalities will get a P500 monthly increase, while domestic workers in other municipalities will see a P1,500 monthly hike.
DOLE said around 64,111 domestic workers, regardless of whether they follow live-in or live-out arrangements, will benefit from this wage hike.
For employees who earn about the minimum wage, DOLE said technical assistance is being provided to enterprises in the Davao Region to "address wage distortions" and close the gap between job levels.
Roughly 402,968 full-time workers are estimated to benefit from this assistance.
The National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) affirmed the wage order issued by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Davao Region on February 23, after finding the board had complied with the requirements necessary to implement a wage increase.
DOLE said the wage adjustment took into account “the needs of workers and their families,” as well as employers' capacity to pay and the region’s economic and social development costs.
Workers will receive the increase in two tranches, beginning March 13, with the second tranche scheduled for September 1. This means that the full increase will only take effect by September.
