MANILA, Philippines — Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. and Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) announced the passing of Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña, honoring a long-time leader whose career was marked by what the institutions described as an “unwavering commitment to service, community development and the advancement of others.”
In a statement, Metrobank and MBFI said they mourn the passing of Sobrepeña, described as “a titan in corporate social responsibility who dedicated his life to the pursuit of the common good,” noting that his career spanned both public service and the private sector.
It said that “from his years in public service, including key leadership roles in the government, to his long and distinguished tenure as president of Metrobank Foundation, he exemplified integrity, compassion and principled leadership.”
Sobrepeña led the MBFI for three decades, a period the bank said was marked by a significant expansion of the foundation’s programs and advocacy work.
“In his three decades leading the Metrobank Foundation, he set new standards for corporate social responsibility,” the statement said, adding that “MBFI’s programs expanded meaningfully across excellence recognition, education, health, the arts and livelihood, creating enduring hope and opportunity for Filipinos from all walks of life.”
Beyond his institutional achievements, Metrobank highlighted Sobrepeña’s personal character and values.
The statement said he “was known for his humility, quiet strength and deep sense of faith,” and that he “lived the Jesuit ideal of being a man for others, leading with both intellect and heart, and inspiring those around him to pursue excellence with purpose.”
Metrobank and MBFI extended their condolences to those he left behind. The institutions also said they intend to continue the work he championed.
Summing up his impact, the statement said, “Mr. Sobrepeña will be remembered not only for what he led, but for how he led – with wisdom, empathy, and unwavering commitment to the greater good.”
