MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) will be lowering its power rates by P0.3557 per kilowatt-hour during the holiday season, the power distributor announced on Tuesday, December 9.
This brings the current cost of electricity down to P13.1145 per kWh, which is still slightly higher than September’s rates when Meralco last reduced power rates.
With the cut, households consuming an average of 200 kWh will be saving around P71 from their electricity bill this month, Meralco Vice President Joe Zaldarriaga said in a statement.
The power concessionaire said the reduced rates were due to the drop in transmission and generation charges.
Transmission charges have decreased by P0.1462 per kWh due to the lower ancillary service charges from the Reserve Market incurred by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
Meanwhile, generation charges have also been reduced by P0.1358 per kWh due to decreased charges from Independent Power Producers (IPP).
Natural gas prices and improved plant dispatch lowered IPP charges by P0.2127 per kWh due to the appreciation of the Philippine Peso against the US Dollar.
Taxes and other charges also decreased by P0.0737 per kWh, slightly contributing to the overall rate cut.
Only the charges from Power Supply Agreements and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) increased primarily due to the scheduled maintenance of San Buenaventura Power Ltd. Co.
Meralco’s distribution charge, which serves as the cost of subscribing to the power concessionaire, has remained the same at P0.0360 per kWh since August 2022.
