MANILA, Philippines — Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has entered into a tripartite deal with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Quezon City government to accelerate green power adoption.
The agreement will facilitate the development of public-private models to support the government’s target of integrating more renewable energy (RE) sources in the country’s power mix.
“One of our core priorities in Quezon City has always been to make energy cleaner, more reliable and more accessible not just for our whole operations but for households and businesses in our city,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.
“Through this agreement with ERC and Meralco, we’re putting systems in place, clear processes, better coordination and stronger support so that more stakeholders can take part in our clean energy transition,” she added.
The partnership aims to ensure faster processing of net metering and distributed energy resource (DER) applications, as well as raise public awareness on the initiative.
The net metering program enables power end-users to build their own RE facilities for personal use and sell any excess electricity generated to the grid. This allows them to receive credits to offset their electricity bills.
Under the agreement, Meralco will establish a dedicated booth within the Quezon City Hall compound for consultations and processing of net metering and DER applications.
The Quezon City government, for its part, will provide logistical support, while the ERC will offer technical and regulatory expertise to ensure the program’s proper implementation.
“The net metering program is one of the best examples of how we can empower ordinary Filipinos to participate directly in crafting our nation’s energy destiny,” outgoing ERC chairperson and CEO Monalisa Dimalanta said.
As of end-July, close to 2,500 net metering customers were in Quezon City, the highest number among all cities and municipalities within Meralco’s franchise area.
“As we move forward, Meralco remains fully committed to reinforcing our support for the government’s initiatives and thrust in RE and energy transition and in making a lasting impact — not just in the lives of our customers but on the progress of our nation,” Meralco chief revenue officer Ferdinand Geluz said.
Meralco is the country’s largest power utility, providing electric service to over eight million customers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
