MANILA, Philippines — Mayon Volcano in Albay has generated its largest pyroclastic density current or PDC, with a brownish plume that rose one kilometer above the crater and reached as far as four kilometers in radial distance, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported yesterday.

Phivolcs, in a video post, said Mayon generated the ash plume at 10:35 a.m. yesterday.

According to Phivolcs, the PDC drifted southwest and brought ashfall over several barangays in Camalig and Guinobatan towns in Albay.

At least eight volcanic earthquakes, 469 rockfall events and 43 PDCs were recorded yesterday.

Alert Level 3, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest remains over Mayon Volcano. Entry into the six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is prohibited.

Phivolcs is also prohibiting the flying of aircraft close to the volcano.
