MANILA, Philippines — Up to 1,230 hectares of agricultural lands in Albay have been affected by the volcanic ash from the recent eruption of Mayon Volcano, according to the Philippine Space Agency.
PhilSA said that of the affected areas, 1,039 hectares are planted with palay, while the rest are planted with other crops.
By comparing satellite images taken before and after the eruption on May 2, PhilSA estimated that the extent of affected areas is about the size of Mandaluyong City.
Aside from agricultural farms, up to 158 kilometers of roads have been affected by ashfall events, the space agency said.
It said cloud formation hampered observation in some areas, resulting in a limited satellite data collection.
The agency has been providing data to assist the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in prioritizing response efforts.
Earlier, local police chiefs were told to refrain from conducting unnecessary inspection of vehicles carrying relief supplies for Mayon evacuees.
Authorities said that relief assistance must be delivered without delay.
27 volcanic quakes logged
A week after the occurrence of a pyroclastic density current along the slopes of Mayon, state seismologists yesterday detected 27 volcanic earthquakes around the volcano.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quakes included three volcanic tremors that lasted two to four minutes.
Aside from the temblors, 318 rockfall incidents and two pyroclastic density current or uson signals have been detected in the past 24 hours since Friday, Phivolcs said.
The volcano emitted lava that flowed toward the Bonga and Mi-isi gullies.
Noting the Mi-isi Gully is filled with volcanic debris, Daraga Mayor Victor Perete warned that the path of lahar may be altered during heavy rainfall, which can affect areas outside the permanent danger zone.
Phivolcs said that an episodic minor strombolian activity and a short-lived lava fountaining as well as moderate plumes rising 200 meters were observed from the volcano.
On Friday, Mayon spewed 2,785 tons of sulfur dioxide.
The volcano remains under Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest.
Entry into the six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone and flying an aircraft near Mayon are strictly prohibited. — Andrew Ronquillo
