DAVAO CITY — The Mati Airport in Davao Oriental is set for a major rehabilitation project this year, officials said.
Mayor Michelle Rabat said Friday that the project will boost the local economy and tourism.
"The upgraded airport will provide a seamless travel experience and position Mati City as a gateway to economic growth and tourism in Mindanao," she said in an interview.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in collaboration with local governments, is spearheading the project.
The new Mati Airport terminal will feature a modern design inspired by local culture. The project includes a new passenger terminal building, a spacious parking facility, and upgrades to runways and taxiways to accommodate larger aircraft.

It will also provide dedicated areas for ground service equipment and fire station facilities.
"With improved airport facilities, Davao Oriental can expect an influx of visitors," Rabat said.
Mati Airport, originally known as Imelda R. Marcos Airport, was constructed in 1976.
The airport had remained underutilized for decades. Once operational, it is expected to serve as a vital transportation hub.
