Win over UE trims gap between UST, UP
MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines eliminated University of the East, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17, and boosted its own Final Four chance in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Riding on the crest of their gigantic win over reigning champion and erstwhile unbeaten National U, the Fighting Maroons weren’t to be denied against the winless Lady Warriors as they needed only 77 minutes to notch the easy triumph.
UP’s win propelled it to solo fifth place at 5-5, trimming the gap behind the suddenly skidding Santo Tomas (5-4).
Joan Monares fired 15 points on 10 hits, three aces and two blocks while Irah Jaboneta chipped in 13 points for UP, which scored a 26-24, 23-25, 17-25, 23-25, 15-12 stunner of NU earlier this week.
Kianne Olango and Kassy Doering chipped in eight each as the Fighting Maroons hardly needed another eruption from seasoned middle blocker Niña Ytang who produced only seven points.
Ytang set a career-high of 30 points on 27 hits and three blocks as UP ended NU’s unbeaten run while snapping a nine-game, seven-year losing drought against the same squad since Season 81 in 2019.
Later, National U (9-1) bounced back in style with a 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18 win over Far Eastern U (6-4) to strengthen hold of the No. 1 spot.
Alyssa Solomon hammered 30 points with Bella Belen (18) and Vange Alinsug (13) having significant contributions.
Faida Bakanke led the Lady Tamaraws with 21 points.
