MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Mark Villar has broken his silence over the PrimeWater issue, denying any connections with the water utility firm.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said that the probe into the water firm revealed that its joint venture agreements increased while Villar was the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary under former president Rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement to the media on Saturday, July 5, Villar said he had only been focused on his job creating critical infrastructure in the Philippines.

“I wish to take this opportunity to clarify that I have no direct or indirect ownership or controlling interest in Primewater,” Villar stated.

“During my tenure as Secretary of Public Works, I did not participate in any capacity whatsoever in any transactions or potential transactions between PrimeWater and any of its partner districts,” he added.

The senator said he hoped his service record would prove his commitment.

PrimeWater’s coverage areas have complained of interrupted services, prompting a government probe into the matter.

The  Local Water Utilities Administration is currently wrapping up its probe, but said it wanted to prioritize returning water to the affected areas first.
