MANILA, Philippines — Mario Bucaro has ended his brief tenure as chief executive officer (CEO) of the Miss Universe Organization, which continues to face controversies weeks after last month’s Bangkok finals.

The Guatemalan diplomat was appointed CEO last November, following the resignation of Thai businesswoman Anne Jakrajutatip earlier this year.

The organization announced his departure in a statement released last Friday, December 12. MUO said that Bucaro carried out “key operational leadership responsibilities” during the 74th Miss Universe competition in Thailand.

“During his tenure, Mr. Búcaro contributed significantly to the coordination of local and international teams, the strengthening of strategic alliances, and the creation of effective channels of dialogue among cultures, sponsors, institutional partners, media outlets, and a global community committed to the empowerment of women. Throughout his trajectory within the Organization, Mr. Mario Búcaro made meaningful contributions in essential areas such as planning, logistics, and coordination with production teams, national directors, and global partners,” MUO said.

Bucaro said in a statement that he has always conducted himself with the highest ethical standards and has consistently sought to leave a positive legacy through each of his collaborations.

He shared that his time with MUO “represented an invaluable period of learning, during which I had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary women, exceptional professionals, and a global community that genuinely believes in the empowerment of women.”

The Miss Universe Organization said it will formally announce a new CEO to succeed Bucaro in accordance with its internal processes.

Bucaro previously served as MUO’s vice president for international relations and led the launch of the "Beyond the Crown" initiative, which promotes women’s leadership, education, and entrepreneurship.

He also served as Guatemala’s minister of foreign affairs and represented the country as ambassador to Israel and Mexico, while concurrently serving as ambassador to Bulgaria and Cyprus.
