The prestigious Woodford Reserve Icon Award is given to an individual 'who has made an outstanding contribution to the hospitality industry worthy of global recognition'
MANILA, Philippines – The late Margarita Forés, one of the most celebrated chefs in the Philippines and across Asia, has been posthumously honored with the Woodford Reserve Icon Award 2025 by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy.
The Woodford Reserve Icon Award recognizes an individual who has made an “outstanding contribution to the hospitality industry worthy of global recognition.”
Forés — the culinary legend behind popular names like Cibo, Lusso, and Grace Park — is hailed for her “transformative influence in the culinary world and her legacy in elevating Filipino cuisine and hospitality.”
Recognized by the academy for her passion, mentorship, and hospitality, she is revered as a much-loved member of the culinary community and a “driving force until the end.” Throughout her illustrious culinary career, Forés — who was fondly called Ma’am GAF by her staff — employed thousands as her restaurant empire grew. Yet, she somehow remembered nearly every person who worked under her.
Originally trained as an accountant, Forés discovered her passion for food in the 1980s when she traveled to Italy. “Immersing herself in its regional cooking traditions, this formative experience shaped her approach to food, inspiring her to introduce Italian flavors to the Philippine dining scene, while championing local ingredients,” Asia’s 50 Best wrote.
“Her work remains a testament to her philosophy: food should be rooted in tradition, elevated with skill, and celebrated for its ability to connect people,” they added. She was also Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2016, and the recipient of the Italian government’s Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Order of the Star of Italy) in 2018. The following year, she was named a United Nations Ambassador for Gastronomic Tourism.
The decorated chef, caterer, and restaurateur died on February 11. She is survived by her son Amado Forés, who heads Steak and Frice and a mano. – Rappler.com
