MANILA, Philippines — Russia will deport 24 Filipinos who have been detained for nine months, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Friday, June 19, after he raised their case with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to the country.

The 24 are scheduled for deportation and repatriation, Marcos told reporters in Russia before flying back to Manila.

He said they could be released as soon as the following day.

"They are ready for deportation tomorrow by 5 p.m. So, those 24 will be going home, back to the Philippines and back to their families," the president said in remarks reported by state-run Philippine News Agency on Friday.

Marcos said he had brought up the detentions in a meeting with Putin, who he said was initially unaware of the case.

The president said Putin also questioned why they remained in custody without being charged.

Marcos said Putin gave an assurance over dinner after their talks that the matter would be resolved.

In a separate statement on his Facebook account, Marcos thanked Putin and the Russian Federation for authorizing the 24 Filipinos' release.

"I thank President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation for their assistance and cooperation in bringing this matter to a positive resolution," Marcos said.

Marcos arrived in Kazan on June 17 for a two-day working visit that included official ASEAN engagements and bilateral talks with Putin.
