Henry Aguda replaces Ivan John Uy, who resigned from his post in early March after serving as DICT chief since May 2022
MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday, March 20, named former UnionDigital president and chief executive officer Henry Aguda as the next Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary.
Aguda will replace Ivan John Uy, who resigned from his post in early March after serving as DICT chief since May 2022.
Throughout his nearly three-year stint, Uy oversaw the implementation of the SIM Card Registration Act, as well as the hacking of several government agency sites, such as that of the House of Representatives and state health insurer PhilHealth.
According to Unionbank’s disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange in August 2024, Aguda resigned from his posts as chief executive of UnionDigital and senior vice president of its parent firm to “pursue external opportunities.”
UnionDigital is Unionbank’s digital banking arm and one of six digital banks licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Apart from his roles with the Aboitiz-led bank, Aguda served as chairman of City Savings Bank and UBX Philippines.
He was also a director at Insular Health Care, BancNet, Metaverse Ventures and Platforms, among others.
In the public sector, Aguda was Digital Infrastructure Lead at the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), a group established by Marcos to assist the government in fostering an inclusive business environment in the Philippines, job creation and digitalization.
“As the Digital Infrastructure Sector Lead of [PSAC], Secretary Aguda played a pivotal role in providing [Marcos] with visionary strategies and innovative initiatives to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and create more than a million digital jobs,” the DICT said in a statement.
Aguda is a Mathematics and Juris Doctor graduate from the University of the Philippines. The new ICT chief is also completing a master’s degree in Applied Business Economics at the University of Asia and the Pacific. – Rappler.com
