MANILA, Philippines — After being hospitalized, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday, January 22, assured the public that he was well, telling his detractors not to get too excited yet.

Marcos was taken to St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City after he experienced “discomfort”. The Palace initially did not disclose his diagnosis.

In a video statement, Marcos addressed the public and told them he was fine. However, he said that he has diverticulitis. The president said it was a common complaint among those who are growing old, as well as those experiencing heavy stress.

“'Wag kayo munang masyadong excited dahil it’s not a life-threatening condition,” Marcos said, addressing detractors who would want him out of the position.

“Do not worry. The rumors of my death are highly exaggerated,” he added.

What is diverticulitis?

The Mayo Clinic described diverticulitis as an inflammation or bulging of pouches within the wall of the large intestine.

The disease is fairly common among people who are 50 years old and above.

“Inflammation of diverticula can cause severe pain, fever, nausea and changes in your stool habits,” the Mayo Clinic said.

The illness is treated with rest, dietary change and antibiotics.
