MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. received one of Japan’s highest and most prestigious honors during his state call on Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Wednesday, May 27.

Marcos received the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum while First Lady Araneta-Marcos received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Precious Crown.

“The Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, established in 1876 by Emperor Meiji, is Japan’s highest decoration and is typically bestowed on foreign heads of state, royalty and distinguished leaders for exceptional service and contributions to Japan,” Malacañang said in a press statement.

“The Order of the Precious Crown, meanwhile, is traditionally awarded to female members of foreign royal families and high-ranking women dignitaries during state visits,” it added.

The Philippines, in turn, conferred the Order of Lakandula with the rank of Supremo or Grand Collar on Emperor Naruhito, and the Order of Gabriela Silang on Empress Masako.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako formally welcomed the Marcos couple. They were joined by Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in welcoming the state guests.

Marcos and the First Lady made the state call on the Emperor and Empress at the Imperial Palace Audience Room where they exchanged pleasantries.

Malacañang said that the Philippine media delegation had the honor of interacting with the Emperor and Empress when the latter “briefly greeted” the media on their way to the Palace.
