MANILA, Philippines — The administration has built and financed more than 423,000 housing units since 2022, President Marcos said yesterday, as he vowed to fast-track home construction and improve access to affordable and decent housing.

During the awarding of new homes under the Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (4PH) Program in Rizal, Marcos assured the public that the government is working to achieve its housing targets in the coming years.

“From July 2022 to January 2026, we were able to build and finance more than 423,000 housing units,” the President said.

“Along with the acceleration of the construction of these (housing units), we are also strengthening the mechanisms to make it easier to acquire houses,” he added.

The government originally aimed to build one million houses per year to address the country’s housing backlog, which has reached 6.5 million.

However, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development revised the target to 3.2 million houses due to issues such as procedural bottlenecks and typhoons.

“There was a backlog, it’s true, we admit that. But the government is working to provide our countrymen as many housing units as possible,” Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said at a Palace press briefing yesterday when asked if the target is still attainable.

Marcos said the government and the private sector would continue working together to accelerate production, improve processes and expand programs, including the 4PH.

During the turnover held at the Megawide Precast Plant in Taytay, symbolic keys were awarded to beneficiaries of housing projects in Palayan, Nueva Ecija; San Mateo, Rizal; Caloocan City; Imus, Cavite; San Fernando, Pampanga; and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

Certificates of lot award were also given to beneficiaries of longstanding presidential proclamations in Los Baños, Laguna.
