MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday, January 13, led the groundbreaking of two additional stops of the Metro Manila Subway Project: the Kalayaan Avenue and the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) stations.
Marcos vowed that once the subway is operational, travel time will be drastically reduced.
"Once the entire 33 kilometer stretch of the Metro Manila Subway system is fully operational, the travel time from Valenzuela to BGC will be reduced from one and a half hours to just 29 minutes," Marcos said.
"This will also significantly improve airport connectivity. From Quezon City to Manila Airport, the travel time will be shortened from more than one hour to 35 minutes," he added.
The subway will connect to LRT-1, MRT-3 and MRT-7 at North Avenue station, while Anonas station will link it to LRT-2.
If the proposed MRT-4 project pushes through, the subway will connect to it via Ortigas station.
The subway will also be interoperable with the North-South Commuter Railway, which can lead to provinces outside of the metro.
"For decades, traffic in the Metro Manila has been more than an inconvenience. It has been a constant consideration affecting our daily decisions. It influences where we work, where we study, and how we plan our lives," Marcos said.
"This administration is determined to address these problems by providing sustainable, long-term solutions. This subway is one of those solutions," he said.
Delays and funding
Construction for the subway project, which is partially funded by the Japanese government, has suffered multiple setbacks and delays. Budget constraints have pushed the target completion date to 2032.
Despite this, Marcos was optimistic. The president said that construction for the subways is now on schedule and that significant progress has been made.
A total of P49 billion has been allotted in the 2026 budget for the railways to the Department of Transportation.
