MANILA, Philippines — More than 3,100 farmers are expected to benefit from the newly rehabilitated Mahayag Dam, which was inaugurated by President Marcos yesterday in Zamboanga del Sur.

Located in Mahayag town, the dam regulates the flow of water in the Salug River and supplies irrigation to nearby rice fields. It serves as a key diversion structure within the Salug River Irrigation System, the largest in Zamboanga peninsula.

The dam incurred damage from flooding in 2022.

“Through this project, we expect a better water diversion, irrigation and other agricultural processes in the region. It will help reduce floods and improve the overall security of homes and livelihoods here in Zamboanga del Sur,” Marcos said.

“That means the supply of water will be continuous. It will not just increase productivity, it will help you with your everyday needs. During rainy season, your communities are prepared and safer,” he added.

Marcos said the reconstruction of the dam does not only offer a continuous water supply, but also hope and a better future. He thanked local farmers for their work and urged them to use the available machinery, technology and knowledge to augment their income and secure a good future for their families.

He said his administration has allocated over P63 billion this year for projects of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), and close to P300 billion for various agriculture programs and projects.

During the event, Marcos turned over 20 solar-powered irrigation pumps to 635 farmers in the region.

The pumps are intended to enhance the local irrigation system, using clean and affordable alternative energy.

The distribution and cleansing of water will be managed by irrigators’ associations, while the NIA will assist in maintaining the specialized solar panels and pump systems.
