MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos returned to the country yesterday after attending the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, the President and First Lady Liza Marcos arrived in Manila before 7 a.m.
The PCO said the President had no scheduled activities at the Palace yesterday.
Before he left the country on Thursday to attend the papal funeral, Marcos designated Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III as government caretakers.
Photos released by the PCO showed Marcos having interactions with US President Donald Trump and former US president Joe Biden at the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square on Saturday.
Today, Marcos is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru at Malacañang.
The two leaders are expected to tackle national security cooperation, maritime law enforcement and the Reciprocal Access Agreement, among other key issues.
Ishiba’s visit to Manila – his first since assuming office in September last year – is until tomorrow.
Also today, Marcos is expected to lead graduation rites at the Philippine National Police Academy in Silang, Cavite.
Last Sunday, the First Lady shared on social media some photos of her and the President strolling around the streets of Rome before flying back to the country.
