“The ASEAN chairship provides an opportunity for MAP to go beyond programs that serve only its members and to undertake initiatives that serve the nation and the region.”
MANILA, Philippines — The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) is looking to play a stronger role in Southeast Asia as the country assumes the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.
Speaking at the business group’s inaugural meeting yesterday, MAP president Donald Lim said that positioning as a dynamic force in national development and ASEAN leadership forms part of the group’s focus areas this year.
“The Philippines assumed the ASEAN chairship for 2026. This is not only a diplomatic milestone. It is a leadership test for us in the private sector,” he said.
According to Lim, the ASEAN chairship provides an opportunity for MAP to go beyond programs that serve only its members and to undertake initiatives that serve the nation and the region.
To play a more active role in ASEAN, he said MAP would provide inputs to help define the business agenda for ASEAN on trade, sustainability and digital integration.
MAP will also strengthen cross-border dialogues, participation in business missions and partnerships to expand its influence and become a key contributor in the region.
On the regional stage, Lim said MAP would ensure that the Filipino perspective is heard in every forum where ASEAN’s future is being shaped.
“This is not only good for our country. It can open new opportunities for our members and strengthen our collective relevance,” he said.
He said MAP would also focus on strengthening its collaboration with government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector to create greater impact.
“These will not be ceremonial signings or photo opportunities, but will be working partnerships with clear deliverables, shared accountability and measurable outcomes,” he said.
As ease of doing business remains a top concern for MAP members, he said the group intends to continue to engage with the government on this issue.
He said MAP would also strengthen collaboration with ASEAN neighbors such as Singapore and Thailand in management excellence exchanges.
Another focus area for the MAP this year is in future proofing through innovation, technology and next-generation leadership.
With the world changing at a rapid pace, Lim emphasized the need to promote innovation and adapt to technologies reshaping industries.
“We will champion transformative directions in digital adoption, ensuring that technology serves not only business growth, but also social development and the deliberate cultivation of next-generation leadership,” he said.
