MANILA, Philippines — East Zone concessionaire Manila Water Co. Inc. is banking on its water treatment facility in Cardona, Rizal to relieve dependency on Angat Dam during the dry season.

In a statement, Manila Water said its Cardona Water Treatment Plant would diversify the company’s water sources to maintain continuous service for about 7.8 million people.

“Crafted through a sequence of phased, multi?billion?peso investments over several years, the Cardona plant marks a vital milestone in Manila Water’s long-term plan to diversify its water sources,” the company said.

It added that ongoing upgrades for the Cardona facility aims to increase its capacity and operational efficiency.

“These improvements, part of Manila Water’s broader infrastructure investment agenda, position the facility to meet growing demand and navigate climate variability more effectively,” Manila Water said.

The water treatment facility supplies up to 100? million liters per day by drawing water from the central portion of Laguna Lake.

“With a robust network distribution system, it serves approximately 800,000 residents in Rizal and neighboring areas, significantly relieving pressure on Angat Dam,” the water concessionaire said.

Angat Dam, located in Bulacan, is the main source of water for Metro Manila. It supplies roughly 90 percent of water to the Philippine capital and surrounding areas.

The company said the water facility maintains a crucial role in ensuring that it remains uninterrupted as consumption surges during dry months.

The company added that its facilities are designed to absorb seasonal spikes in demand while maintaining system stability.

Manila Water’s Cardona Water Treatment Plant in Rizal, inaugurated in 2019, expands water supply for the East Zone concessionaire and serves towns such as Binangonan, Angono, Taytay, Baras and Jalajala.
