MANILA, Philippines — Manila Water Co. Inc. has fully shifted its retail power supply across Metro Manila and Rizal to 100 percent renewable energy, marking a first for any water utility in the Philippines.

The water utility of billionaire Enrique Razon Jr. has tapped AdventEnergy, the retail electricity arm of Aboitiz Power Corp., for the supply of clean power for its enterprise operations.

The agreement covers the East Zone of Metro Manila and Rizal, where Manila Water serves more than 7.8 million customers.

Beyond the East Zone concession, the company’s other operations have been sourcing power from a diversified mix, with renewables accounting for 20 percent of supply.

Manila Water’s non-East Zone business units include Cebu Water, Tagum Water, Calbayog Water, Laguna Water, Estate Water, LARC Water, Boracay Water and South Luzon Water.

“It truly makes a difference in the lives of our customers knowing that a water utility can work with a partner like AdventEnergy to deliver sustainable solutions that we have worked so hard to pursue,” Manila Water president and CEO Roberto Locsin said.

This latest deal, built on a partnership that started in 2023, is expected to help Manila Water reduce its carbon footprint while supporting the country’s energy transition agenda.

“Guided by our philosophy of always-on innovation, we intend to continue building on our early successes and commit to the pursuit of service excellence for families and communities in need of reliable water services,” AdventEnergy president James Yu said.

“This pursuit goes hand-in-hand with Manila Water’s promise of creating better lives and resilient economies through the provision of critical infrastructure,” Yu said.
