MANILA, Philippines — Transport group Manila began its three-day strike on Tuesday, December 9.

The strike will last until December 11. Manibela chairperson Mar Valbuena said that the group may extend its strike if the problems are not solved.

Manibela announced the strike on December 9 in protest against what it alleges are excessive penalties, the failure to renew franchises, and a pervasive "payola culture" within government agencies, particularly the Department of Transportation (DoTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Due to the strike, the jeepney drivers who are part of the group stopped plying routes.

On its Facebook page, Manibela shows the build-up of people because there are no jeepneys to ride.

“Pasensya napo wala pong biyahe dahil ginigipit kami ng gobyerno particular ang DOTr, LTFRB at LTO (Land Transportation Office),” Manibela said in one of its Facebook posts.

(We sincerely apologize, but there are no trips/vehicles available because the government, particularly the DOTr, LTFRB, and LTO, is pressuring us.)

The Philippine National Police on December 8 said that it will mobilize its personnel to maintain public safety and support commuters during the three-day transport strike.

Mobility vehicles will also be on standby to ferry commuters who may struggle to find rides during the strike, according to the PNP.
