MANILA, Philippines — Around 200 families were left homeless after 100 houses were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Mandaluyong yesterday morning.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze started at around 6 a.m. and escalated to third alarm before it was contained at 9:19 a.m.
The fire reached the boundary of Barangay San Jose, the BFP said.
Two residents suffered minor injuries while evacuating. They were treated at the site by personnel of the Philippine Red Cross.
A temporary evacuation center was set up by the local government for displaced families.
Barangay San Jose captain Joan Batan said the fire was prevented from spreading to more homes due to the coordinated response of fire volunteers.
The fire erupted near Block 36 in Barangay Addition Hills at the boundary of San Jose Sitio 4, according to Batan.
“It was contained before it spread to more homes in San Jose, with only walls separating the areas,” Batan said. “This is another test for our community, but no lives were lost. We are grateful to the fire volunteers and everyone who helped. In every disaster, we see unity.”
Arson probers said they have yet to determine what caused the fire and the cost of damage to property.
