ILOILO CITY , Philippines — A passenger was shot and wounded by airport security officers for refusing to surrender a knife detected in his baggage at the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo yesterday afternoon.
The suspect, identified only as Roland, 54, was brought to the Western Visayas Sanitarium and General Hospital in Sta. Barbara for treatment of a gunshot wound in the shoulder.
Reports said that the knife was detected during a routine x-ray screening at the pre-departure area.
Personnel of the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) asked the suspect to open his carry-on baggage for manual inspection, but he reportedly refused.
The OTS personnel sought the assistance of the police Aviation Security Unit, whose members asked Roland, who was then holding the knife, to surrender the weapon.
The suspect was told that he could check in his knife, but he refused and reportedly tried to stab a security officer several times, prompting authorities to shoot him.
