CEBU CITY — A 27-year-old man accused of raping his 16-year-old stepdaughter multiple times was arrested on Sunday after attempting to kill himself as National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents moved in to arrest him in Naga City, Cebu.

The victim and her grandmother filed a complaint with the NBI on Saturday, detailing the abuse.

The victim, a Grade 10 student, reported being molested by her stepfather since she was 14, at least once a month over the past two years.

The most recent incident allegedly occurred on Saturday morning, the grandmother said.

The victim's grandmother is a job order employee at the NBI's regional office, and it was she who reported the situation after noticing her granddaughter's distress.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed the victim is now in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The suspect, a construction hardware driver, fled to the mountains after learning of the complaint. He then attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the head with a.22 caliber firearm.

The bullet did not penetrate his skull and he was later apprehended by authorities at his home.

NBI supervising agent Donaver Inesin said that the victim decided to come forward to stop the abuse and that she feared her stepfather after seeing his gun.

The suspect will be charged with qualified rape under Republic Act 8353 and child abuse under Republic Act 7610.
