MANILA, Philippines — Amid the global oil crisis, facilities of the Makati city government will operate using renewable energy sources.

The city’s 154 properties, including the city hall, Ospital ng Makati and University of Makati, will source electricity from ACEN Corp.’s solar, wind and geothermal plants.

The company’s nine-year renewable energy supply agreement with Makati, signed on March 19, will allow the city government to save P300 million in electricity costs.

Based on Makati officials’ estimates, the deal would prevent 289,885 metric tons of carbon emissions from being released to the planet.

“At a time when global uncertainties, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, continue to put pressure on power prices, this partnership is both timely and strategic,” Mayor Nancy Binay said.

ACEN plans to install 19 electric vehicle charging stations at Makati’s facilities to support the city’s e-jeepneys, e-buses and e-shuttles.
