MANILA, Philippines — Power grids in Luzon and the Visayas were placed under yellow alert yesterday following forced outages of several power plants.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) raised the alert status from 4 to 10 p.m. in Luzon, and from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Visayas.
It was the first yellow alert in Luzon and the second in the Visayas this year, NGCP data showed.
The alert in Luzon was attributed to the tripping of major hydroelectric and gas-powered plants.
During the period, Luzon’s peak demand reached 11,966 megawatts, while available capacity was limited to 12,223 MW.
The system imbalance prompted Meralco to implement automatic load dropping, resulting in power interruptions lasting 10 to 15 minutes.
Limited power reserves in Luzon also led to the unavailability of power imports to the Visayas, where peak demand stood at 2,368 MW while available capacity was only 2,597 MW.
Up to 50 power plants across Luzon and the Visayas have been on forced outage, while 27 others are operating at a derated capacity.
