MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued 116 public utility vehicle (PUV) terminals with show cause orders, citing numerous violations in their facilities.
In a statement on Tuesday, February 17, the LTFRB said that it has inspected 243 bus and PUV terminals across the country to inspect if they were complying with government standards.
“We will not hesitate to shut down the operations of these terminal managers, some of them are connected with transportation companies. The agreement is clear: the government authorizes them to operate a terminal under the condition that they will provide the basic facilities to ensure passenger comfort and safety,” LTFRB Chairperson Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II said in a statement.
At least 40 of the PUV terminals inspected were in Metro Manila.
Some of the violations that the LTFRB found in these terminals included insufficient facilities to shield passengers from the weather, dysfunctional comfort rooms, and tight waiting spaces.
The LTFRB also found several PUV terminals with insufficient security measures and accommodations for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Mendoza lamented that some terminals even had the gall to charge passengers for bathroom use.
The agency said that it will continue monitoring and inspecting PUV terminals across the country.
“This will continue because the goal is to make the conduct of regular inspection a new normal,” Mendoza said.
