MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area near the northern tip of the country is likely to develop into a tropical depression, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said yesterday.

PAGASA, in its 5 p.m. forecast, said the LPA was estimated at 200 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes as of 3 p.m. It is expected to move northwestward toward Taiwan.

Current atmospheric conditions favor the LPA’s intensification, the state weather bureau noted.

If it fails to develop within the forecast period however, the system’s chances of becoming a tropical cyclone may quickly diminish, especially as it nears land.

While the LPA has yet to enter Philippine territory as a named storm, PAGASA said its presence is already enhancing the southwest monsoon, bringing rains to several areas in the western part of the country.

Residents in Pangasinan, Zambales and Occidental Mindoro were advised to remain alert for possible flooding and landslides.

In the next 24 hours, PAGASA forecasts cloudy skies with scattered rains in northern Luzon, particularly in Batanes and Ilocos provinces.

Metro Manila and most of Luzon will experience warmer weather with chances of afternoon thunderstorms, while Visayas and Mindanao will generally have fair conditions, except for isolated rain showers.

The rest of Luzon will experience warmer, drier conditions, with Metro Manila temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius and Baguio from 17 to 24 degrees Celsius.
