MANILA, Philippines – Senator Imee Marcos, sister of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has initiated a Senate foreign relations committee hearing on the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte over an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Key officials, including those from law enforcement, justice, and security agencies are expected to attend the Thursday, March 20 hearing.
President Marcos green-lit cooperation with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), which led to Duterte’s arrest and subsequent transfer to the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands. Senator Marcos, a reelectionist in the May 12 midterm elections, chairs the foreign relations committee.
The Senator’s agenda for the hearing includes:
- “clarification of the involvement and the roles of the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Police Organization, and the various government agencies in the arrest of [Duterte]
- “confirmation that measures were taken to ensure that the rights of [Duterte] under domestic laws and relevant treaties were properly protected throughout the process
- “other matters that may aid the Committee in crafting necessary legislation on the coordination between Philippine authorities and international tribunals and law enforcement organizations.”
