MANILA, Philippines — Robert Francis Prevost made history on May 8 as the first pope from the United States, taking the name Leo XIV.
The 69-year-old pontiff succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke at the Vatican.
Pope Leo XIV becomes the 267th pontiff to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
On Sunday, his papacy will officially begin with a ceremony at St. Peter’s Square. The pope is set to celebrate the inaugural Mass, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of Catholics and political leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, to the Vatican.
The Mass will begin at 4 p.m. Philippine time (10 a.m. / 0800 GMT). Before that, at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. / 0700 GMT), Pope Leo is scheduled to greet the crowd in the popemobile, the specially adapted vehicle often used by the late Pope Francis to connect with the faithful.
