MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers tagged as recipients of cash in suitcases by the 18 former bodyguards of expelled fugitive party-list representative Zaldy Co have separately filed libel and cyber liber charges against their accusers.
The latest to press charges was Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong (Lanao del Sur first district), chairman of the House of Representatives committee on suffrage and electoral reforms, who lodged the criminal complaint before the Office of the City Prosecutor of Marawi.
In his complaint-affidavit, Adiong accused the respondents, led by their lawyer Levito Baligod, of spreading what he described as false and malicious allegations. Adiong is seeking at least P20 million in moral damages and P5 million in exemplary damages.
“By reason of and as a direct consequence of these criminal acts, I suffered severe mental anguish, a besmirched reputation, and widespread social humiliation,” he said.
Lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro also confirmed filing libel cases against the 18 who claimed to be former soldiers.
“Two weeks ago, I wish to state for the record that I filed a libel case against these so-called 18 ex-Marines on the maleta issue because I realized that this is needed not only to protect my interest but also to protect the integrity of the prosecution panel,” she said. “I am on the official position that I am denying vehemently the accusations.”
Reps. Terry Ridon (Bicol Saro party-list) and Benny Abante (Manila sixth district) also filed complaints against the 18.
