Large drug seizures not alarming — PRO-6

ILOILO CITY — The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) said the drug situation in the province is not alarming, despite the significant volume of illegal drug confiscations in recent weeks.

"No cause for alarm. At least before this supply goes to the users, we have already apprehended them," said PRO-6 director BGen. Jack Wanky.

Wanky attributed the large seizures to intensified operations against illegal drugs, highlighting a notable increase in law enforcement activities.

"Our assessment shows that the reason for our numerous accomplishments is that we have almost doubled our operations. We have truly focused on illegal drug operations, particularly supply reduction," he explained.

He also noted the police are receiving more information from the public, helping authorities crack down on drug activities.

Wanky also pointed out that drug syndicates are attempting to flood the market with supplies in an effort to regain former drug users.

"They want to flood the market because their capital in making shabu is minimal. By increasing the supply, they hope to lure back former drug dependents," he said.

Wanky however, admitted the daunting challenge of fully monitoring Iloilo's vast and porous coastlines, which drug syndicates exploit.

"We can only do so much. We are aware of the situation here, and our coastlines are very porous," he said.

He added that authorities have sought assistance from fisherfolk and Bantay Dagat (sea patrols), but some illegal shipments still manage to slip through.

"This shows that we cannot completely monitor all shorelines," he admitted.
