BACOLOD CITY — Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson called for an intensified campaign against dengue amid the rising number of cases in Negros Occidental.

Lacson on Monday said that after the increase of dengue cases last year "there is still a spike."

"We have followed the same protocols," said Lacson, who has ordered the strict implementation of anti-dengue guidelines.

"It's not rocket science to prevent dengue. It's all about cleaning your community. No stagnant water and if anyone feels sick, especially the children, they should right away have themselves check at the nearest rural health clinics."

He said it should be the mindset of every community to prevent dengue from spreading.

A total of 250 dengue cases were reported from Jan. 1-18, an increase of 297 percent compared to 63 cases in the same period last year.

Two fatalities have been recorded this year.

Bago City reported the highest number of dengue cases in January at 58, followed by San Carlos City with 20 cases, Kabankalan City with 19, Pulupandan with 15, Silay City with 13, Valladolid with 11 and La Carlota City with 10.

In 2024, Negros Occidental recorded 6,799 dengue cases, a 354.48 percent increase from 2023, health officials said.

There were also 22 dengue-related deaths in 2024.

In response to the alarming rise in dengue cases in the province, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Negros Occidental-Bacolod City Chapter is intensifying its efforts to combat the health threat.

"Our campaign focuses on raising awareness about dengue prevention, emphasizing the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and promoting cleanliness in homes and communities. By regularly cleaning gutters, disposing of stagnant water, and covering water containers, we can collectively stop the spread of the disease," PRC-Negros Occidental said in a statement.

The agency also encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of dengue, such as high fever, severe headache, rashes, and muscle pain, and to seek medical attention promptly if needed.

"Let us unite to protect our families and communities," the PRC added.
