MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson on Wednesday, February 4, confirmed that a draft report from the Blue Ribbon Committee (BRC) recommended charges against three sitting senators: Jinggoy Estrada, Joel Villanueva and Chiz Escudero.

A draft of the BRC report was initially leaked to the public on Tuesday.

However, Lacson clarified in a media interview that this was merely a draft and not the committee report itself. For the document to become the actual BRC report, it needs to be signed and approved.

“We are recommending them to undergo preliminary investigation, so why would we go against what is already happening?” Lacson told reporters.

Lacson said that there were no hard feelings between him and the aforementioned senators, but he welcomed whatever discussions may happen during the plenary session.

Other people that the BRC recommended charges against were:

  • Former congressman Zaldy Co
  • Former congresswoman Mitch Cajayon
  • Former senator Bong Revilla

Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez was recommended for further inquiry, Lacson said. However, this is a lighter category compared to the others, who were more directly implicated.

Asked by reporters if Lacson was ready for the possible fallout from the BRC report, especially if he and Senate President Tito Sotto would be ousted from their positions, the veteran lawmaker called it “part of the game”.

At least four senators have signed the report, namely Sens. Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan. Counting himself, this brings the number of signees to four senators.

Sens. JV Ejercito, Win Gatchalian and Migz Zubiri withdrew their signatures.

Ejercito, Estrada’s brother, said that the BRC members needed more time to review the draft, with several addenda being proposed, hence their withdrawal.
