Mason Amos and Kean Baclaan lead a balanced attack as the La Salle Green Archers beat out the UST Growling Tigers for the top seed in the FilOil Preseason Cup
MANILA, Philippines – Fortifying their status as a top contender for the upcoming UAAP season, the La Salle Green Archers finished the FilOil Preseason Cup eliminations unscathed after outlasting UST, 94-86, on Wednesday, July 9 at the FilOil Center in San Juan.
La Salle topped the UAAP group with a 6-0 record, while the Growling Tigers finished with a 4-2 slate to settle for the second spot.
“This is the first time we played them this preseason and we can really see that UST is a different team. We were really excited to play them,” La Salle head coach Topex Robinson said as he emphasized UST’s resolve.
The Green Archers, who fell short of the UAAP Season 87 title against UP, leaned on a balanced outing to stifle UST, which is also tipped to be one of the favorites for Season 88.
Kean Baclaan and Mason Amos led La Salle with 18 points each, while Mike Phillips and Jacob Cortez had 14 and 11 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, UST relied on Ice Danting, who tallied 19 points built on 6 triples. Nic Cabanero delivered 18 points, with no other Tiger scoring in double figures.
La Salle weathered numerous runs from the Tigers, who caught fire for 15 threes.
“Actually, with us, anybody can get hot at any time. For me, I just keep working,” Amos said.
Earlier, the UP Fighting Maroons took down the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 63-54, to take the third seed in the UAAP group with a 4-2 record.
UP lost to UST earlier in the tournament, giving the Tigers the upper hand in the standings.
The NU Bulldogs completed the playoff cast for the UAAP bracket, tallying a 3-3 record.
The UAAP squads will face the top four NCAA teams in the crossover quarterfinals slated on Friday, July 11.
