BACOLOD CITY — An early evening eruption of Kanlaon Volcano has resulted in ashfall affecting several barangay across Negros Island.
A report by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Negros Island Region (NIR) on Saturday showed that the ashfall has affected seven local government units (LGUs) in the island region.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that in Bago City, Negros Occidental, ashfall impacted barangay Mailum, Ma-ao, Ilijan, Bacong, Abuanan, Dulao and Tabunan.
Additionally, in La Carlota City, Barangay Sto. Niño and Guintubdan experienced ashfall, as well as Barangay Zamora in Pontevedra.
The ashfall even reached the coastal village of Barangay Pta. Taytay in Bacolod City.

In Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, Barangay Lumapao and Linuthangan reported ashfalls in two sitios.
The report of Donato Sermeno III, OCD- NIR regional director, said six Bago City barangay (villages) were affected.
La Castellana in Negros Occidental and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, La Carlota City, San Carlos City and Potevedra also experienced ashfalls.
Phivolcs noted that the eruption generated a shock wave which was recorded by the infrasound station at a maximum of 204 Pascals, 5 kilometers east of the volcano’s crater.
A significant rumble was audible within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano.
Judith Artigas, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) officer of Canlaon City, reported that their office received reports from residents that a loud booming sound was heard and a tall plume was seen.
Pyroclastic flows were also seen on the southern slopes of La Castellana, Negros Occidental, extending up to 1 kilometer from the crater.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid the permanent danger zone surrounding Kanlaon Volcano and to seek shelter in designated evacuation centers.
Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2.
The OCD-NIR activated its Emergency Operations Center on 24/7 standby.
It also deployed its Regional Incident Management Team for data validation.
Concerned agencies like the Department of Health, and Department of Social Welfare and Deployment are on standby.
The uniformed units like the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Air Force and Bureau of Fire Protection were also placed on standby
The Bago City CDRMMO were also deployed to Barangay Mailum for possible evacuation.
