MANILA, Philippines — Sen. JV Ejercito is cautioning his colleagues against postponing anew the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, warning that delaying the BSKE to free up funds for the oil crisis must be scrutinized for legal infirmities.
While acknowledging Congress’ authority to alter the election calendar, Ejercito stressed that any move to defer the polls must align with the strict parameters established by the Supreme Court.
Ejercito highlighted the democratic cost of repeated delays, and noted that the voting public is eager to elect fresh local executives.
Continuous election suspensions rob potential youth candidates of their chance to serve before they age out of the youth council brackets, he said.
