MANILA, Philippines — Determined to stamp out corruption in the Bureau of Fire Protection, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla yesterday urged the public to report irregularities or abusive practices of BFP personnel.
Remulla particularly wants to see pieces of evidence submitted to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) against fire safety inspectors who force business owners to procure overpriced fire extinguishers in exchange for inspection certificates.
“If an inspector visits, pressures you or acts beyond the ambit of their responsibilities, take a video and report it to the DILG. I will personally take care of it,” Remulla said in Filipino in a statement.
Remulla made the appeal after an investigation showed some BFP inspectors attempted to bypass the use of body-worn cameras by sending an initial team ahead of the official inspection of commercial establishments.
This is done to allow corrupt BFP personnel to offer expensive fire extinguishers without being caught on camera, he said.
Remulla urged the public to come forward and not be afraid if they have evidence against erring BFP officers.
“We can’t put an end to corruption if you are afraid. I will ensure that justice is served,” he said.
Remulla has embarked on a massive internal cleansing drive in the BFP starting with its chief, Jesus Fernandez, whom he accused of pocketing millions of pesos from illegal activities in the bureau.
