MANILA, Philippines — Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla has called out Bulacan Gov. Daniel Fernando over an incident along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) allegedly involving security escorts of the governor and a son of President Marcos.
Remulla yesterday said he talked to Fernando over the phone after receiving reports about what he described as the governor’s “king-like” behavior when traveling along NLEX.
Remulla said his office has been receiving complaints that Fernando’s convoy often occupies all four lanes of the expressway.
“We have been receiving numerous complaints about Fernando’s king-like behavior when he is traveling along the NLEX, that no one can overtake his convoy,” Remulla said.
Malacañang has denied reports of an alleged road harassment involving any of Marcos’ son.
When asked about the incident, Remulla told journalists that they should direct their queries to the Land Transportation Office as the DILG has referred the matter to the LTO for investigation.
The alleged incident has gone viral on social media. The post said Marcos’ vehicle overtook cars that were occupying three lanes of NLEX.
LTO chief Markus Lacalinao denied claims that a show-cause order has been issued against a driver involved in the supposed incident.
“That is not from us. I am still verifying it. We will give an update, but as of now it is not officially from us,” Lacalinao said, referring to the show-cause order.
“We will look into it, we will investigate it first,” Lacanilao added.
Since local government units are under the jurisdiction of the DILG, Remulla said he called to ask Fernando about the incident.
Initial verification showed that the vehicles – two Toyota Hi-Ace vans, a Fortuner and a Land Cruiser – were traced to the provincial government of Bulacan.
“I told him that I received complaints about his behavior when traveling along the NLEX. I told him that this has to stop,” Remulla said, noting that Fernando refuted the complaints.
He said Fernando turned over three firearms and the vehicles involved to the Central Luzon police for inspection and verification.
